Curve of the Creek

Description

I was looking for new bike trails to explore when I found this area on the edges of the city just south of where I live. Behind me there are new subdivisions but across the creek the land is still largely rural. While riding there I thought "I need to come back here to paint, before they knock down that shed and build three ugly 'architecturally controlled' houses there."

Can you tell I don't like suburbs? A great deal of my life is spent trying to get past them to find things to paint that aren't houses that all look the same.

I got lost looking for the entrance to this trail, partly because I always get lost and partly because people who build suburbs want you to never leave them. I stopped at random by one of those artificial lake things to look at geese and lo and behold, the entrance I wanted was right there.

Once I had descended to the creek I had a much happier time. I startled a great blue heron on my way down. They are enormous and magnificent birds. This is the second time I've seen one while out painting. Too bad it didn't stick around, I would have liked to paint it. I clambered over some rocks and walked around a bit before I picked a nice shady spot to paint in.

I had a lovely painting session over a few hours and when I was done I took a walk around to see if I could find the heron again and snap a photo of it from a distance. Unfortunately I came upon it quite unexpectedly and startled it again. I gave up then. No point in endlessly disturbing the animals. I did get a quick photo of it winging away to another loop of the creek so it will probably turn up in one painting or another. I picked the thistles out of my pants and decided to call it a day.

On my way out of the creek I noticed a half-fallen sign stuck in some weeds advising people that they were doing mosquito spraying in the area. Peachy. My next two bike rides were absolutely awful and I think it's related to sitting in a pesticide fog for three hours. Whatever it was, I seem to have recovered.
